FUNCTION
Noggin is a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) antagonist expressed in Spemann's organizer. Murine Noggin is expressed in condensing cartilage and immature chondrocytes, as are many BMPs. It is essential for cartilage morphogenesis and joint formation. Defects in NOG are the cause of multiple synostoses syndrome 1 (SYNS1), symphalangism proximal syndrome (SYM1) and tarsal-carpal coalition syndrome (TCC).
