Stem Cells

Normal adult stem cells have the ability to immortalize themselves via self-renewal and to generate mature cells of appropriate tissue through differentiation. Pluripotent stem cells of the early age embryo can form any of the three germ layers—ectoderm, mesoderm or endoderm—whereas multipotent adult stem cells are restricted in the cell lineages they can become.

Because of these properties, stem cells show tremendous potential in the areas of developmental biology, disease modeling research, and cell therapy studies. Antibody based detection methods such as immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry are commonly used for the characterization of various stem cells and their differentiated cells. Unsurprisingly, high-quality antibodies are one of the key factors contributing to the success and rapid progress of stem cell research.
