SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES
Belongs to the SEC20 family.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY
Isoform 1 is highly expressed in heart, brain, liver skeletal muscle and pancreas. Isoform 3 is moderately expressed in placenta, lung and kidney. Isoform 4 is highly expressed in testis and small intestine.
POST-TRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATION
Polyubiquitinated. 'Lys-63'-linked polyubiquitination by RNF185 increases the interaction with the autophagy receptor SQSTM1. Undergoes 'Lys-29'- and 'Lys-63'-linked polyubiquitination by RNF186 that may regulate BNIP1 localization to the mitochondrion.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION
Endoplasmic reticulum. Mitochondrion.
FUNCTION
The adenovirus E1B protein is a viral homolog of the Bcl-2 family of proteins that are involved in regulating cell death. A family of interacting proteins, which are designated Nip or Bnip and include BNIP-1, BNIP-2, BNIP-3 and Nix, associate with both the E1B protein and Bcl-2 proteins to mediate apoptotic signaling. BNIP-1 contains a hydrophobic transmembrane domain, which enables its localization to the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic recticulum and mitochondria.
