The L1 (LINE 1) retrotransposable element encodes two proteins, ORF1p and ORF2p. Mouse ORF1p, a coiled-coil-mediated trimer of 42-kDa monomers. It may function as a nucleic acid chaperone binding its own transcript and therefore preferentially mobilizing the transcript from which they are encoded.
